Stance
An engaged list of 500 outperforms a disengaged list of 10,000. Optimise for attracting the right subscriber, not the most subscribers.
Why it holds
The classical metric of CRM, list size, is increasingly disconnected from the size of the audience you can actually reach. A list that is mostly dormant is not worth its headline count. It is worth the engaged subset the provider still routes your mail toward, and the dormant remainder actively drags reach for the engaged part. See engagement is the new deliverability for the mechanism.
Consequences
Measure engagement weighted list size
Engagement weighted list size is the only growth metric that means anything. Raw list growth is mostly vanity.
- Discount led acquisition inflates signups with deal seekers who churn fast. See list building.
- Sunsetting dormant subscribers protects the active cohort rather than shrinking the asset. Run it as part of ongoing database health, not a one-off purge.
